THE ANTIQUE ROSE EMPORIUM…
In 1984 he opened the Antique Rose Emporium which specialized in the re-introduction and distribution of these historic roses. His work has been recognized in Smithsonian and National Geographic magazines and in many trade journals as well.

Connie Hilker has been a life long gardener, digging in dirt and watching plants grow. She is also a history geek who loves nothing more than to read or listen to a true story from the past. Years ago she was given a copy of Thomas Christopher’s book “In Search of Lost Roses”.  It told the stories of rose historians and rustlers, who visited old homes and cemeteries, collecting stories and cuttings. She dreamed, at that time, that she might become one of them. And, she did.

Connie works at Hollywood Cemetery in Richmond, Va, to manage the rose collection. Hollywood was designed in 1847 specifically to be a garden cemetery.
Garden cemeteries became popular starting in the mid-1800’s, as combination cemeteries, gardens, and public parks.

The Rose Chat Podcast Team Teresa Byington and Chris VanCleave with today's guest, Connie Hilker
On today's show, you'll meet Connie Hilker and she's got a lot to say about the preservation of Heritage roses. Teresa caught up with her at the American Rose Society's fall national convention being held in San Diego California where she spoke on this topic and the Rose Chat Podcast was there to capture it all for you including a special chat with Teresa and Connie after her talk. It's an exclusive you don't want to miss.
Connie is a lifelong gardener with over 600 varieties of roses in her personal collection. She is the chair of the Heritage and Preservation Committee of the American Rose Society, is a member of the Board of Trustees of the Heritage Rose Foundation, and Old Garden Rose chair for the American Rose Society Colonial District.
Connie manages the documentation, preservation, and restoration of the historic rose collection at Hollywood Cemetery in Richmond, Virginia, and is the rose consultant at the Thomas Jefferson Center for Historic Plants at Monticello in Charlottesville, Virginia. She can often be found collecting roses from cemeteries and old home sites; teaching classes on rose history, care, and propagation; or tending to the roses in her garden in Hartwood, Virginia. Connie’s overall message is that "roses arent rocket science" and she strives to show that anyone with a basic knowledge of gardening can choose appropriate roses and grow them well.

Susan Young is a perennial gardener who became hooked on roses after buying one bagged rose from K Mart! She was with us in January of 2015 to talk of her growing from that one rose to more than 250. You can still enjoy that  podcast here.  Susan now is the owner of Restoration Roses and Nursery and her rose collection is well over 750 and just keeps growing. As a collector of heirloom roses she is working hard to bring them back into the public arena — saving many of them from near extinction! Susan also supplies local florists with her lovely blooms. Adding adding charm and fragrance to their bouquets.

You will be inspired by this enthusiastic lover of roses and their companions!
