The Rose Chat Podcast crew had a blast at this year's rose trial event at the magnificent Biltmore Estate in Asheville, North Carolina.
Rose Chat creator Chris VanCleave always says, “Good things happen when people and roses come together” and this weekend was no exception.
The Biltmore International Rose Trails brings the nation’s top rose breeders and growers together as a culmination of three years’ worth of trials that will ultimately determine some of the best roses produced in the world.

BILTMORE PRESS RELEASE
An apricot-colored princess has captured the top prize at the recent finals of the 2018 Biltmore International Rose Trials.
Princesse Charlene De Monaco (Meidysouk), a hybrid tea rose bred by House of Meilland in France, and distributed by Star Roses & Plants, took home the George and Edith Vanderbilt for Most Outstanding Rose of the trials.
The winning rose was among a collection of roses planted for trials in 2016 in the western border of Biltmore’s historic Rose Garden. Since 2011, Biltmore’s Rose Garden has been home to the trials in which nearly 200 varieties from growers and breeders worldwide have been planted and cared for by Biltmore’s expert horticulturalists. A permanent jury of rose experts judged the plantings four times a year during the trial’s two years.
In addition to winning the Best in Show Award, Princesse Charlene De Monaco won the Cornelia Vanderbilt Cecil Award for Most Fragrant Rose, and the Pauline Merrell Award for Best Hybrid Tea.
Additional winners this year were:
Oso Easy Urban Legend (R. ‘ChewPatout’), bred by Chris Warner of Spring Meadow Nursery, winner of the Lord Burleigh Award for Best Disease Resistant, and the Chauncey Beadle Award for Best Shrub Rose.
Highwire Flyer (Radwire), bred by William Radler of Star Roses and Plants, winner of the Gilded Age Award for Climbing Rose, and the William Cecil Award for Best Growth Habit.
Shining Moment (Radshining), bred by William Radler of Star Roses and Plants, winner of the Edith Wharton Award for Best Floribunda.
Roses competing for this year’s titles came from breeders based in the U.S., France, Great Britain, and Germany. Trials of this type are open to rose breeders around the world – from professional to beginner. Competing roses are evaluated for overall health and rigor; fragrance; disease resistance; and the ability to repeat bloom.

The motion picture Sully hit theaters this month. It's the tale of Captain Sullenberger and crew and how they crash landed US Airways flight 1549 into the Hudson River saving all 155 passengers on board. It's a story that's come to be known as "The Miracle on the Hudson." Our guest on today's show is Robert Neil Rippetoe, he's the hybridizer that created the rose named to commemorate this heroic event and he's here to talk with us about this rose, his hybridizing program and also offers some great tips for new rose growers.

Biltmore’s gardens and grounds are flourishing this spring as a progression of colorful blooms blankets the estate, paying homage to the legacy of Frederick Law Olmsted and his final professional project--George Vanderbilt’s gardens at Biltmore. The estate’s celebration of Olmsted’s vision and the beauty of springtime, Biltmore Blooms runs through May 26, 2016.
The Rose Chat Podcast had an opportunity recently to chat with Biltmore Horticulturalist Emily Wilson about this special time of year, also about “Fashionable Romance: Wedding Gowns in Film” special exhibition of over 40 wedding dresses used in such films as "The Duchess." Emily shared with us some of the new roses planted in the walled garden of the estate and she also shared with us about how the Biltmore uses beneficial insects to combat pests in the garden. It's a conversation you don't want to miss.
