The Rose Chat Podcast Team Teresa Byington and Chris VanCleave with today's guest, Connie Hilker
On today's show, you'll meet Connie Hilker and she's got a lot to say about the preservation of Heritage roses. Teresa caught up with her at the American Rose Society's fall national convention being held in San Diego California where she spoke on this topic and the Rose Chat Podcast was there to capture it all for you including a special chat with Teresa and Connie after her talk. It's an exclusive you don't want to miss.
Connie is a lifelong gardener with over 600 varieties of roses in her personal collection. She is the chair of the Heritage and Preservation Committee of the American Rose Society, is a member of the Board of Trustees of the Heritage Rose Foundation, and Old Garden Rose chair for the American Rose Society Colonial District.
Connie manages the documentation, preservation, and restoration of the historic rose collection at Hollywood Cemetery in Richmond, Virginia, and is the rose consultant at the Thomas Jefferson Center for Historic Plants at Monticello in Charlottesville, Virginia. She can often be found collecting roses from cemeteries and old home sites; teaching classes on rose history, care, and propagation; or tending to the roses in her garden in Hartwood, Virginia. Connie’s overall message is that "roses arent rocket science" and she strives to show that anyone with a basic knowledge of gardening can choose appropriate roses and grow them well.

 2018 BILTMORE INTERNATIONAL ROSE TRIALS

The nation's top rose gardeners turned out in high style in the walled rose garden at the Biltmore Estate to decide the winners of the 2018 Biltmore Rose Trials. The Rose Chat Podcast team was on-site to judge and participate in the event and we captured it all for our listeners.
On this broadcast, you'll hear from Biltmore Director of Horticulture, Parker Andes, on the rich horticultural legacy at Biltmore Estate and we'll chat with Paul Zimmerman, Curator of the rose trials about how the trials work and how they benefit home gardeners. It's a show you don't want to miss!

BILTMORE PRESS RELEASE
An apricot-colored princess has captured the top prize at the recent finals of the 2018 Biltmore International Rose Trials.
Princesse Charlene De Monaco (Meidysouk), a hybrid tea rose bred by House of Meilland in France, and distributed by Star Roses & Plants, took home the George and Edith Vanderbilt for Most Outstanding Rose of the trials.
The winning rose was among a collection of roses planted for trials in 2016 in the western border of Biltmore’s historic Rose Garden. Since 2011, Biltmore’s Rose Garden has been home to the trials in which nearly 200 varieties from growers and breeders worldwide have been planted and cared for by Biltmore’s expert horticulturalists. A permanent jury of rose experts judged the plantings four times a year during the trial’s two years.
In addition to winning the Best in Show Award, Princesse Charlene De Monaco won the Cornelia Vanderbilt Cecil Award for Most Fragrant Rose, and the Pauline Merrell Award for Best Hybrid Tea.
Additional winners this year were:
Oso Easy Urban Legend (R. ‘ChewPatout’), bred by Chris Warner of Spring Meadow Nursery, winner of the Lord Burleigh Award for Best Disease Resistant, and the Chauncey Beadle Award for Best Shrub Rose.
Highwire Flyer (Radwire), bred by William Radler of Star Roses and Plants, winner of the Gilded Age Award for Climbing Rose, and the William Cecil Award for Best Growth Habit.
Shining Moment (Radshining), bred by William Radler of Star Roses and Plants, winner of the Edith Wharton Award for Best Floribunda.
Roses competing for this year’s titles came from breeders based in the U.S., France, Great Britain, and Germany. Trials of this type are open to rose breeders around the world – from professional to beginner. Competing roses are evaluated for overall health and rigor; fragrance; disease resistance; and the ability to repeat bloom.

A new generation of rose gardeners are emerging on the scene and Brian Puckett is definitely making his mark in the world of roses. As curator of the nation’s first municipal Earth-Kind Rose trial, Brian has a passion for sustainable gardening and for helping others achieve gardening success.
He put his design and planning efforts to good use as Vice Chairman of the Helena Alabama Beautification Board where he helped transform the cities landscape into a veritable paradise of plants using native perennials and Earth Kind Roses. These efforts have caught the attention of other municipalities who are now reaching out for advice and guidance as they transition into the world of sustainable landscape design. Last year, Brian collaborated with Texas A & M to launch the nation’s first municipal Earth-Kind Rose Trial and currently serves as the trial curator. Next month, he hit's the road with rose chat creator and America's Favorite Rose Gardener, Chris VanCleave on the "Rose Kings Sustainability Tour". “Innovations in rose breeding have now produced roses that are virtually disease free and they bloom like mad”, says Puckett. During the tour, we’ll reveal the various types of roses, their growth habits as well as the level of care they need so people can make informed decisions for their gardens.”
Brian joins us today to talk about the rose trial, about sustainable gardening and a whole lot more!

Pam Greenewald joins us to talk about Rose Garden Angels, Inc., a non profit that uses horticulture therapy to help those suffering from PTSD and other disorders. They currently have 8 Veterans growing roses and getting paid for every rose they grow. "It's quite an uplifiting experience for these veteran's to see how they can grow something that brings a lot of beauty to the world." says Pam.

"These roses are generally disease-free and most were created in the 1800’s. The roses have all been grown on their own roots organically. Our Care Card accompanies each purchase so you may continue to grow your rose in the natural tradition in which it began." said Greenewald.
