The gift of a rose cutting set her on a journey of discovery that eventually took her to a New York City cemetery to find the beloved patron of a rose.  Teresa is an award winning rose gardener, master gardener and co-host of the Rose Chat Podcast. Adorned with beautiful statues, dramatic markers and lush gardens, the Sacramento Historic City Cemetery is an outdoor museum recording California history from the Gold Rush Era through today and is the home of the Sacramento Historic Rose Garden at the Cemetery. Anita Clevenger, Curator of the rose garden joins us to chat about the history of the garden, the wonderful collection of roses that grows there and she shared information on their upcoming Open Garden Day where rose lovers from around the globe come to tour the garden and have an opportunity to purchase on-site some of rare roses that are growing in the cemetery. This garden was recently awarded the Great Rosarians of the World Award "Garden Hall of Fame Award" for the outstanding efforts of the team of volunteers that work tireless hours to ensure that this living museum is maintained and that all who come receive an education on the roses therein. Cemetery Rose Website

This week Herb Grasshof volunteer extrodinare at the San Jose Municipal Rose Garden joins us to talk about his work at the garden and also how they recruit and train volunteers for projects at the garden. Herb has given over 1,300 hours of volunteer service working in this garden. We'll also be chatting about the roses planted there.

  Lucas S. Jack - Biltmore Rosarian Lucas Jack has served as Biltmore’s Rosarian since 2011. In this role, his responsibilities include overseeing the care of 1,800 roses in the Historic Rose Garden and maintaining the space as a world class show garden for guests within the Historic Walled Garden. Lucas is also involved in research and restoration projects related to the Rose Garden, including efforts to restore the garden to the lush opulence it enjoyed in the 1930s. In addition, Lucas oversees Biltmore’s International Rose Trials.   At the age of 14, Lucas began working in landscaping and operated his own business for several years. In 2004, he interned with Biltmore’s Arboriculture Department. Three years later, Lucas graduated from Haywood Community College with a degree in Forestry. Lucas serves on the board of directors for the North Carolina Arboretum in Asheville. He and his wife are the proud parents of one child and are expecting another.   A National Historic Landmark, Biltmore is the private home of the late George W. Vanderbilt, now owned by his grandson, William A. V. Cecil. The property, which has been open to the public since 1930, is completely self-sufficient and receives no outside funding. Biltmore includes America’s largest private residence, Biltmore House, designed by renowned 19th century architect Richard Morris Hunt, and the surrounding 8,000 acres of gardens and forests, landscaped by Frederick Law Olmsted. Today, Biltmore has grown to include Antler Hill Village, which features the award-winning Winery and Antler Hill Farm; the four-star Inn on Biltmore Estate; Equestrian Center; numerous restaurants; event and meeting venues; and Biltmore For Your Home, the company’s licensed products division.
