BUILDING CONNECTIONS IN A NEW ERA Lucy Medvec National Director of Membership and Development – American Rose Society   In the days of shelter in place, the American Rose Society is using new tools to build connections with those who love the rose!   ABOUT LUCY...   Lucy Medvec joined the American Rose Society as National Director of Membership and Development in October 2018. At the time, her knowledge of roses had more to do with being a recipient of bouquets and arrangements rather than someone who grew them in her yard. Two years later, she is now the proud owner of 18 somewhat thriving bushes, with a wish list of at least 30 more varieties for her 2021 garden. Her favorite rose is Pope John Paul II.   Lucy has over 30 years’ experience in the nonprofit field, specifically in development and marketing. What she enjoys most about her current position with the ARS is the ability to speak with its members from around the country on a daily basis and assist local societies in their efforts to increase membership at a local level.    She is living proof that anyone can grow roses, no matter their age or level of experience, and is always seeking ways to engage a younger generation of gardeners and future rosarians. She enjoys being able to work in such a beautiful place as the American Rose Center and considers it one of Shreveport’s finest treasures. A California native who has called Shreveport, Louisiana, home since 1992, Lucy is the wife of Mark, a retired B-52 pilot, and two sons, Andrew, 25, and Daniel, 22.   I would like to talk about the different ways that we have enhanced the membership experience during the pandemic. For example, we now offer the ability for local societies to hold free online meetings for their membership, we held a Green Thumb seminar (usually a Shreveport event) that was attended by over 200 people from around the country and will offer more of them in the future, and the opportunities I have had over the past few months to speak to members and help them feel connected to the American Rose Society. It is a wonderful surprise that our membership has not decreased these past few months - if anything, we are bringing in more new and lapsed members who are reconnecting to the ARS.       OUR HOSTS: Chris VanCleave - www.RedneckRosarian.com Creator of the Rose Chat Podcast. Ping Lim: A Life Dedicated to Roses   Today we are joined by Rose Hybridizer Ping Lim. As many of you know, Ping is the Hybridizer of the very popular Easy Elegance Collection of roses and a new line of roses called True Bloom.   Ping has devoted his life to researching and developing roses, and has created hundreds of varieties. Listen in as Ping shares his story.      ABOUT PING...   Ping has devoted his life to researching and developing roses, and has created hundreds of varieties renowned for their color, fragrance, hardiness, and disease resistance. He believes that a good rose is one that brings beauty, joy, and health to the people and the planet.    His mission seems simple: Design stunning roses that can be grown by anyone, any-where, without any harmful chemicals. But this goal is more complicated than it sounds. Ping has exceptionally high standards for quality, and often submits his varieties to more than ten years of field trials before releasing them to market. His varieties have been tested all over the United States—from the hottest deserts of Arizona to the rainiest valleys in Oregon, and spanning the bitter winters of Boston to the humid summers of Florida—and in numerous countries, including China, Japan, Taiwan, France, Italy, Germany, Russia, and the United Kingdom.   More on the True Bloom Collection here.   https://true-bloom.com       Listen to any episode anytime online for FREE!   OUR HOSTS: Chris VanCleave - www.RedneckRosarian.com Creator of the Rose Chat Podcast. A MILLENNIAL'S THOUGHTS ON ROSES Andrew Barocco Today we talk with a millennial about the future of roses and how they fit in with their lifestyle and culture.    ANDREW BAROCCO... Andrew Barocco holds dual positions, one in academia, and the other in industry, as both a graduate student under Dr. David H. Byrne in the Horticultural Sciences department at Texas A&M University, and the Director of the Breeding & Production Manager at The Antique Rose Emporium respectively. He grew up in the Acadiana region of Southern Louisiana where he was strongly influenced by the Cajun culture and his Cajun heritage. He graduated from Louisiana State University in 2016 with an undergraduate degree in Horticulture. Also while at LSU, his undergraduate research successfully evaluated exotic sweet potato germplasm lines for new sources of insect resistance. Also while at LSU, he restored the Ornamental Sweetpotato Breeding Program and developed hybrid lines containing both ornamental foliage and commercial grade US No.1 storage roots. These sweet potatoes were patented by LSU and released by Concept Plants as the “Treasure Island” Series. The Treasure Island Series is also the recipient of the 2020 Green Thumb Award™. He moved to Texas in 2017 to pursue his graduate degree under Dr. Byrne. His research is to determine the genes responsible for thornlessness in roses. Not long after moving to Texas, he began work at The Antique Rose Emporium. There, he took up the reins of reinvigorating the breeding program by making wide and difficult species crosses and working with rare varieties in order to introgress new and valuable traits into commercial and old garden roses. Andrew is a (CNLP) Certified Nursery and Landscape Professional; placed as the 1st Overall Individual in the J. Benton Story Horticultural Judging Contest at the ASHS – Southern Region Conference 2015, and has served as the Student National President of the (ASHS ACB) American Society of Horticultural Science, Association of Collegiate Branches in both 2015 and 2016. In 2017 he was the winner of the William C. Welch Landscape Horticulture Scholarship. In 2019 Andrew became the recipient of the Rising Star Award from the American Rose Society. Occasionally involved in student government, at LSU Andrew served as the Assistant Director for Campus Affairs and Sustainability from 2015 to 2016, and at Texas A&M he served as an emergency GPSC delegate, and a candidate for Student Body President 2018.  THE SHOW: www.RoseChatPodcast.com Listen to any episode anytime online for FREE anywhere podcasts are available.  Our Hosts:Chris VanCleave - www.RedneckRosarian.com Creator of the Rose Chat Podcast.
