THE DIRT ON SOIL: GAYE HAMMOND
In this episode we are joined by a great Rose Chat friend, Gaye Hammond, to get all the dirt on soil Gaye takes us on a deep dive on the importance of good soil, moves in to take the mystery out of soil testing and pH, gives us up to the minute research-based info on fertilizers, and ends with the importance of mulch - and it's not just for "pretty!" Ron Daniels, a rose chat favorite, is here to give us advice on growing our rose societies.

Ron is the former president and current co-president of the Nashville Rose Society - a society that has seen phenomenal growth at a time when many societies have dwindling numbers.

MORE ABOUT RON...

Ron is a third-generation gardener who loves and enjoys growing roses. He also shares his experience with others who have the same desire to grow champion roses and other plants and to do so successfully.
Below are some of his rose growing achievements and skills:
Master Consulting Rosarian with the American Rose Society
Member of Nashville Rose Society — 2009 Bronze Medal Winner — Co-President
Consulting Rosarian for Belmont University Adelecia Acklen Rose Garden and other public and private gardens
Master Gardener for Sumner County Master Gardeners of the State of Tennessee
Marketing Representative for “HOLY COW” premium soil mix
Garden speaker with the main topic being Growing and Caring for Roses
Featured guest on 2 shows of the “Volunteer Gardner,” a national cable NPT television program
Featured guest on Rose Chat Podcast with the topic being “How to Grow Roses”
Ron’s Thoughts:
“I have enjoyed growing roses for more than 20 years and I grow and maintain 150 rose plants in my garden at my home in Hendersonville, Tennessee. These roses include Hybrid Teas, Grandifloras, Shrub Roses, Miniatures, Climbers, David Austin English Roses, and other companion plants. These roses provide me much pleasure, but they also provide for an ongoing flower ministry at my church, Long Hollow Baptist Church located in Hendersonville, Tennessee.”
Ron’s Personal Mission Statement: “To grow roses and to share with others. Teach beginners rose-growing basics. Open my personal garden up to public garden tours. To continue to learn about growing roses and remain teachable. Committed to mentor and encourage others on how to care for and share roses"

Here is the label that Ron referred to. These go on all roses at the garden centers they partner with.

ROSE CULTURE AND HISTORY
Dr. Malcolm Manners

Dr. Malcolm Manners joins us to talk about his work with Rose Mosaic Virus and the beautiful rose gardens and rose collections at Florida Southern College. We also chat about the history behind the roses.

After listening to this episode, it will be evident why in 2013 he was awarded the "Great Rosarian of the World" for his many years of work on rose mosaic virus disease and as an educator in the field of rose culture.

ROSE GARDENS OF FLORIDA SOUTHERN COLLEGE

Garden areas are marked in red...

For those of us wanting to visit the gardens, Dr. Manners has shared some tips on the best time to do so!

The first two weeks in April are the very best, with nearly the whole garden in bloom. Usually, late November is pretty good, especially for Teas.

From April through mid-February, we always have quite a lot of good blooms.

Parking Notes:

Visitors could park in any lot not specifically marked as reserved for faculty/staff/handicapped, but probably the best lot to try can be GPS mapped as 915 Frank Lloyd Wright Way, Lakeland. That's a fake address, which leads to the entrance to the parking lot.  If you use the college's official address (111 Lake Hollingsworth Drive), it will just take you along the lake, and there's nothing really there, certainly no good parking.

ABOUT DR. MALCOLM MANNERS...

Dr. Malcolm has been teaching at Florida Southern College since 1981 and specializes in fruit production, roses, and techniques of propagation of various crops.

Since 1996, he has participated in 14   U S A I D - funded Farmer to Farmer volunteer missions to developing countries. This program works to help alleviate extreme poverty through education on better crop production methods. Countries he's worked with Ethiopia, Egypt, India, Bangladesh, Nigeria, and many more.

Dr. Manners is also active in the preservation of heirloom genetic resources in roses and is a trustee of the Heritage Rose Foundation.

In 2013 he was awarded the  "Great Rosarian of the World" for his many years of work on rose mosaic virus disease and as an educator in the field of rose culture.
