The Rose Chat Podcast Team Teresa Byington and Chris VanCleave with today's guest, Connie Hilker
On today's show, you'll meet Connie Hilker and she's got a lot to say about the preservation of Heritage roses. Teresa caught up with her at the American Rose Society's fall national convention being held in San Diego California where she spoke on this topic and the Rose Chat Podcast was there to capture it all for you including a special chat with Teresa and Connie after her talk. It's an exclusive you don't want to miss.
Connie is a lifelong gardener with over 600 varieties of roses in her personal collection. She is the chair of the Heritage and Preservation Committee of the American Rose Society, is a member of the Board of Trustees of the Heritage Rose Foundation, and Old Garden Rose chair for the American Rose Society Colonial District.
Connie manages the documentation, preservation, and restoration of the historic rose collection at Hollywood Cemetery in Richmond, Virginia, and is the rose consultant at the Thomas Jefferson Center for Historic Plants at Monticello in Charlottesville, Virginia. She can often be found collecting roses from cemeteries and old home sites; teaching classes on rose history, care, and propagation; or tending to the roses in her garden in Hartwood, Virginia. Connie’s overall message is that "roses arent rocket science" and she strives to show that anyone with a basic knowledge of gardening can choose appropriate roses and grow them well.

What a delightful conversation this was! Susan Lyell Young was a
perennial gardener in Nashville, TN when she rescued a bagged Mr. Lincoln rose
from Kmart. That was  three years ago and since then she has fallen in
love with roses and collected more than 250 mostly vintage and antique roses.
She particularly loves the vintage polyanthas and pre-WWII hybrid teas,
noisettes, and hybrid musks. Ms. Young gardens on an urban
city lot of 11/0th an acre and is currently looking for some land in the
country so that she might grow a proper garden. When not tending to the roses
Ms. Young is an avid reader of rose history and culture and we couldn't be
happier to have her as our guest this evening. Hear her favorite roses as well as some growing tips and insights on growing the worlds' most beloved flower.  Follow Susan on Instagram:  http://www.Instagram.com/Rose.Cottage
