This week Herb Grasshof volunteer extrodinare at the San Jose Municipal Rose Garden joins us to talk about his work at the garden and also how they recruit and train volunteers for projects at the garden. Herb has given over 1,300 hours of volunteer service working in this garden. We'll also be chatting about the roses planted there.

"Bravo Lake Botanical Garden is California’s cornucopia. The ten acre facility features an “agricultural theme” characteristic of the farming region and heritage. With more than one mile of gardens, visitors walking, bicycling, and in wheelchairs are treated to (depending on the season) a lavish display of roses, sunflowers, flowering fruit trees and tidy rows of colorful fresh vegetables. The gardens provide the most unique setting to see, smell and taste the best of California’s fruits and vegetables. 
From May to October, the gardens display exquisite fruit collections of citrus, grapes, peaches, plums, cherries, apricots, selected vegetables and many others.  The rose gardens, with more than 100 varieties, are most beautiful April to May and September to October.  
The gardens are a partnership between the Woodlake Pride Inc. and City of Woodlake.  The City of Woodlake provides the land and water. Woodlake Pride Inc. has been “growing kids” in the gardens for more than 15 years. Adult volunteers of Woodlake Pride mentor youth with outdoor learning and volunteer opportunities. Marci Martin fell in love with roses when she was a little girl, and the love affair goes on.  She has been growing roses for 36 years in four different locations in the state of Connecticut.
Marci has been on the Board of Directors of the Connecticut Rose Society for about 15 years.  She has served as Secretary, Vice President, and two terms as President.  She has been an ARS Consulting Rosarian since 2000, and received appointment as Master Rosarian in 2010.  She was honored to be awarded the ARS Outstanding Consulting Rosarian Award in 2008, and was awarded the ARS Silver Honor Medal for the Yankee District in 2012.
