Two Great Guests | Exploring The World Of Roses ------------------------------------------------- David Clemons David Clemons resides in Grant, Alabama, where he and his wife,Tammy, grow more than 250 exhibition type hybrid teas, miniatures and minifloras. As an avid rose exhibitor, he has competed and won awards on the local, district, and national levels. David is a Consulting Rosarian and past president of the Huntsville Twickenham Rose Society in Huntsville, Alabama. His hybridizing efforts have led to the introduction of several "thoroughbred" minifloras: 'Ruffian', 'Charismatic', 'Foolish Pleasure', and 'Whirlaway'. He holds a Business degree in Accounting from the University of Texas.  Currently, Mark serves as a Texas Nursery Landscape Association State Director.  Mark and his wife, Sharon, owners of the nursery, reside in Mineola, Texas.   Lucas S. Jack - Biltmore Rosarian Lucas Jack has served as Biltmore’s Rosarian since 2011. In this role, his responsibilities include overseeing the care of 1,800 roses in the Historic Rose Garden and maintaining the space as a world class show garden for guests within the Historic Walled Garden. Lucas is also involved in research and restoration projects related to the Rose Garden, including efforts to restore the garden to the lush opulence it enjoyed in the 1930s. In addition, Lucas oversees Biltmore’s International Rose Trials.   At the age of 14, Lucas began working in landscaping and operated his own business for several years. In 2004, he interned with Biltmore’s Arboriculture Department. Three years later, Lucas graduated from Haywood Community College with a degree in Forestry. Lucas serves on the board of directors for the North Carolina Arboretum in Asheville. He and his wife are the proud parents of one child and are expecting another.   A National Historic Landmark, Biltmore is the private home of the late George W. Vanderbilt, now owned by his grandson, William A. V. Cecil. The property, which has been open to the public since 1930, is completely self-sufficient and receives no outside funding. Biltmore includes America’s largest private residence, Biltmore House, designed by renowned 19th century architect Richard Morris Hunt, and the surrounding 8,000 acres of gardens and forests, landscaped by Frederick Law Olmsted. Today, Biltmore has grown to include Antler Hill Village, which features the award-winning Winery and Antler Hill Farm; the four-star Inn on Biltmore Estate; Equestrian Center; numerous restaurants; event and meeting venues; and Biltmore For Your Home, the company’s licensed products division.

  This week on Rose Chat Radio, we welcome Cydney Wade of Rose Petals Nursery. Cydney will be with us to talk about efforts to preserve Old Garden, Heirloom and Heritage variety roses.    Cydney has been growing  and preserving roses for over 36 years and says "There is a past with each Old Garden Rose that you grow. It was taken from a cutting of a rose that was taken from a cutting of a rose all the way back to the original plant. Your rose is a part of a plant that crossed the Atlantic Ocean during the 1800's or crossed America in a covered wagon with a pioneer family taking part of their past to their new home. " She'll be sharing some of these roses as well as offering care tips.
