Ping Lim: A Life Dedicated to Roses
Today we are joined by Rose Hybridizer Ping Lim. As many of you know, Ping is the Hybridizer of the very popular Easy Elegance Collection of roses and a new line of roses called True Bloom.
Ping has devoted his life to researching and developing roses, and has created hundreds of varieties. Listen in as Ping shares his story.
ABOUT PING...
Ping has devoted his life to researching and developing roses, and has created hundreds of varieties renowned for their color, fragrance, hardiness, and disease resistance. He believes that a good rose is one that brings beauty, joy, and health to the people and the planet.
His mission seems simple: Design stunning roses that can be grown by anyone, any-where, without any harmful chemicals. But this goal is more complicated than it sounds. Ping has exceptionally high standards for quality, and often submits his varieties to more than ten years of field trials before releasing them to market. His varieties have been tested all over the United States—from the hottest deserts of Arizona to the rainiest valleys in Oregon, and spanning the bitter winters of Boston to the humid summers of Florida—and in numerous countries, including China, Japan, Taiwan, France, Italy, Germany, Russia, and the United Kingdom.

SHARING PUBLIC GARDENS DURING A PANDEMIC
Shauna Moore
Today we chat with Shauna Moore, the Horticultural Supervisor of Colonial Park Gardens in Somerset County, New Jersey. She is also the curator of the beautiful Rudolf van der Goot Rose Garden. Shauna takes us behind the scenes of dealing with a pandemic as you work to make public gardens available to the public safely in a time when they need them the most.
About Shauna...
Shauna Moore is an enthusiastic rosarian who works as the Horticulture Supervisor for Somerset County Park Commission and Colonial Park Gardens where she curates the internationally acclaimed Rudolf W. van der Goot Rose Garden. Born and raised in Minneapolis, Minnesota, she holds bachelor’s and master’s degrees from the University of Minnesota in Horticulture Science and Landscape Architecture. Shauna's love has always been roses–particularly the old, rare, prickly, fragrant ones– and focuses hard on public enjoyment and the care and cultivation of roses. She is a member of a number of rose groups and societies. She currently resides in Lambertville, NJ with her two dogs and a guy named James.
About the Rudolf W. van der Goot Garden...
The Rudolf W. van der Goot Rose Garden is one acre in size and contains more than 3,000 roses of 325 varieties. As an accredited All-America Rose Selections (AARS) display garden, it is entitled to display AARS award-winning roses one year before their release to the public. The garden was named in honor of Rudolf W. van der Goot, the first horticulturist with the Somerset County Park Commission, as a tribute to his efforts in designing and developing the garden.

A MILLENNIAL'S THOUGHTS ON ROSES
Andrew Barocco
Today we talk with a millennial about the future of roses and how they fit in with their lifestyle and culture.
ANDREW BAROCCO...
Andrew Barocco holds dual positions, one in academia, and the other in industry, as both a graduate student under Dr. David H. Byrne in the Horticultural Sciences department at Texas A&M University, and the Director of the Breeding & Production Manager at The Antique Rose Emporium respectively.
He grew up in the Acadiana region of Southern Louisiana where he was strongly influenced by the Cajun culture and his Cajun heritage. He graduated from Louisiana State University in 2016 with an undergraduate degree in Horticulture. Also while at LSU, his undergraduate research successfully evaluated exotic sweet potato germplasm lines for new sources of insect resistance. Also while at LSU, he restored the Ornamental Sweetpotato Breeding Program and developed hybrid lines containing both ornamental foliage and commercial grade US No.1 storage roots. These sweet potatoes were patented by LSU and released by Concept Plants as the “Treasure Island” Series. The Treasure Island Series is also the recipient of the 2020 Green Thumb Award™.
He moved to Texas in 2017 to pursue his graduate degree under Dr. Byrne. His research is to determine the genes responsible for thornlessness in roses. Not long after moving to Texas, he began work at The Antique Rose Emporium. There, he took up the reins of reinvigorating the breeding program by making wide and difficult species crosses and working with rare varieties in order to introgress new and valuable traits into commercial and old garden roses.
Andrew is a (CNLP) Certified Nursery and Landscape Professional; placed as the 1st Overall Individual in the J. Benton Story Horticultural Judging Contest at the ASHS – Southern Region Conference 2015, and has served as the Student National President of the (ASHS ACB) American Society of Horticultural Science, Association of Collegiate Branches in both 2015 and 2016. In 2017 he was the winner of the William C. Welch Landscape Horticulture Scholarship. In 2019 Andrew became the recipient of the Rising Star Award from the American Rose Society.
Occasionally involved in student government, at LSU Andrew served as the Assistant Director for Campus Affairs and Sustainability from 2015 to 2016, and at Texas A&M he served as an emergency GPSC delegate, and a candidate for Student Body President 2018.

THE NATIONAL CLEAN PLANT NETWORK: Dr. David Zlesak joins us today to talk about this network comprised of clean plant centers, scientists, educators, state and federal regulators, large and small nurseries, and growers of specialty crops that all work together to ensure that plant propagation material is clean and available. He'll also be talking about some of his own rose introductions many of which are grown in gardens around the nation. Dr. David Zlesak currently serves as a director of the American Rose Trials for Sustainability program and is a member of the Advisory board of the National Clean Plant Network for Roses.
MORE INFO ABOUT THE CLEAN PLANT NETWORK:
http://nationalcleanplantnetwork.org
http://www.fao.org/plant-health-2020/about/en/
MORE ABOUT DR. ZLESAK:
Dr. David Zlesak is a Professor of Horticulture at the University of Wisconsin-River Falls. As a kid growing up in Milwaukee, David loved being outside and gardening in their typical sized city lot. Gardening helped him feel close to his grandparents who lived a few hours away and still had a small farm. David enjoyed growing various plants his grandparents sent him home with, which included one rose. In 1984 a Sunday paper gardening section article about Will Radler's rose breeding hobby inspired him, and as a 13 year old he wrote to Will for more information. David loved art, science, and roses, and breeding roses seemed to be the perfect thing to combine all these loves. Will got him connected to the Rose Hybridizers Association. Their newsletters and a local rose breeding mentor who became like an additional grandfather to him, Elton Strack, helped to solidify his love of roses and rose breeding.
David earned his degrees in horticulture & plant breeding and genetics. For the past 11 years David has been teaching undergraduate horticulture students. He loves to mentor the next generation of horticultural professionals and along the way use his experiences with roses whenever possible.. David is a long time member of the American Rose Society ant Twin Cities Rose Club. He is a Master Consulting Rosarian and loves speaking to groups on roses and the research him and colleagues are working on. Besides rose genetics, David loves to work with landscape rose trialing efforts and studies disease resistance in roses. Over the past decade he has helped characterize new rose viruses and black spot resistance genes.
